Updated 18 August, 2008. This test is given to the dog and owner/handler team who have gone through 10-12 lessons of the PAAPP basic obedience training. Dogs which have completed the test successfully may continue to agility training or may opt for competitive obedience training. Speak to your instructor which path you want to pursue with your dog. THE CANINE SOCIAL ADAPTABILITY TEST 1 (CSAT 1)
INTRODUCTION This test is to evaluate the result of training and socializing of the dog by the handler. It is not designed to be a temperament test but to be more of an aptitude/potential test. This test is for dogs and handlers who have gone through PAAPP’s basic obedience training course.
Pre-Requisites 1) Dogs to be at least 6 months old. 2) All dogs must have been vaccinated against all major diseases. 3) Pedigreed and Non-pedigreed dogs are eligible. 4) Dogs should be fit, healthy and able to undergo the test without any difficulty (a vet will be consulted to assess any condition that may give concern). 5) The dogs must be registered with the Persatuan Agility Anjing PP. 6) Female dogs who are in season will not be allowed to participate in the test during the test period.

a) Heeling on a loose leash This is to demonstrate the handler’s ability to control the dog. The dog must not be seen to be tugging, pulling or lagging severely. The handler should not have to pull the dog to walk. The dog should willingly perform this test. The test will include at least a left turn, a right turn and an about turn with one stop in between and another at the end. The dog need not be perfectly aligned with the handler and need not sit when the handler halts. TOTAL MARKS: 10 POINTS (full marks or nil to be awarded). b) Accepting a friendly stranger This is to demonstrate that the dog is willing to accept a friendly stranger. A friendly stranger shall approach the handler and greet the handler and engage in conversation. The dog must not show signs of aggression, anxiety or shyness. TOTAL MARKS: 10 POINTS (full marks or nil to be awarded). c) Acceptance of petting by a friendly stranger This is to demonstrate the dog’s willingness to allow a friendly stranger to pet it while it is with its handler. The evaluator shall pet the dog and walk a circle around the dog and handler. The dog must not show signs of aggression, anxiety or shyness. TOTAL MARKS: 10 POINTS (full marks or nil to be awarded). d) Acceptance of handling by a friendly stranger This is to demonstrate the dog’s willingness to allow a friendly stranger to handle it while it is with its handler. This means that the evaluator shall inspect the dog, examine the ears and front paws and brush the dog. The dog should accept the above calmly without showing any signs of aggression, anxiety or shyness. e) Obey the Sit, Down and Stay commands This is to demonstrate that the dog will respond to the Sit, Down and Stay commands as a result of obedience training by the handler. The handler shall be next to the dog (on leash) and the evaluator shall instruct the handler as to to the commands ("Sit you dog", "Down your dog", "Ask your dog to stay"). The stay should lasts for thirty (30) seconds. The handler is allowed to use more than one command and may take a reasonable amount of time to complete this test. The handler must not use force on the dog to make it obey the commands. TOTAL MARKS: 10 POINTS (if dog refuses to obey the stay command – 0 point, even if it has passed the Sit and Down commands). f) Reaction to distraction This is to demonstrate the dog’s confidence when faced with common distracting situations (e.g. loud music, yelling, etc). The dog may be in Sit, Stand or Down position. It does not matter if the dog changes position. The dog may appear slightly surprised but must not panic and try to run away or show aggression or severe anxiety. TOTAL MARKS: 10 POINTS (full marks or nil to be awarded). g) Obey the "Come" Command This is to demonstrate the dog obeying the Come command. The handler should leave the dog in a Sit Stay position and walk at least three (3) meters away. The handler should turn and face the dog. The evaluator will instruct the handler to "Call your dog". The handler may encourage the dog using body language and call the dog verbally. No formal finish is required but the handler can touch the dog. TOTAL MARKS: 10 POINTS (if dog comes willingly – full marks, if more than 1 command is given - 5 points, if it comes and runs off before the handler can hold it - 5 points, if it fails to come within a minute - 0 point). h) Reaction to another dog This is to demonstrate that the dog can be civil in the presence of other dogs. The dog may be in any position the handler wishes. Another handler with a dog shall approach and circle at least one (1) meter away and call out greetings. The dog may show curiosity but not aggression, anxiety or shyness. The dog must not pull or yank the leash in an attempt to get at the other dog. TOTAL MARKS: 10 POINTS (full marks or nil to be awarded). i) Walking through a crowd This is to demonstrate that the dog is under control in public places. The handler and dog shall walk around and pass closely to other people. The dog may show curiosity but not aggression, anxiety or shyness. Persistent barking is not allowed. TOTAL MARKS: 10 POINTS (full marks or nil to be awarded). j) Supervised Separation This is to demonstrate that the dog can be left with another person when the handler is within sight. The handler leaves the dog (at any position) with the evaluator and walks at least seven (7) meters away for a minute. The dog is on leash and must not show aggression, anxiety or shyness. The dog is allowed to move but not pull the evaluator in the direction of the handler or anywhere else. TOTAL MARKS: 10 POINTS (full marks or nil to be awarded).
CERTIFICATION The minimum mark for the dog to pass the CSAT 1 is 80 points. A Certificate of Excellence shall be awarded for dogs obtaining minimum 80 points. Dogs who do not qualify may retake the test when it is next conducted. Dogs who have qualified shall not be eligible to retake. THE CANINE SOCIAL ADAPTABILITY TEST 1 (CSAT 1)
