Gamblers Test

The objective of a Gamblers Test is to choose your own course and accumulate as many points as possible. The dog with the most points wins. If dogs have the same points, the fastest dog wins.

There are two parts to a Gamblers game: the opening sequence and the closing sequence (which is also known as the Gamble). In the opening sequence obstacles are in random order and points are gained for obstacles correctly negotiated. The Gamble includes specific obstacles within a handler containment area. These obstacles need to be completed successfully in order with the handler at the required distance from the dog. The Gamble consists of 4 obstacles, including the table, which shall be the last obstacle.

Opening and Closing sequence- The judge shall determine the opening sequence and closing sequence timing and shall be revised from time to time. Below is the fixed standard until the next revision.

Rules for the Opening Sequence- The dog is allowed to start anywhere in the course. The handler shall lift his hand to signify that he is ready. The steward shall stand next to the handler and ask “Are you ready?” Upon the handler saying “YES”, the steward shall say “GO” and start the stop watch. The steward will blow the whistle upon the set time of 36 seconds and 33 seconds for the Mini and Maxi dogs respectively.

    • Points are only awarded for two successful attempts of each obstacle, although each obstacle may be attempted as many times as desired with no points awarded (except when near the start of the gamble to use up time)
    • If a dog attempts an obstacle unsuccessfully it may be repeated later or back to back, as long as a pole has not been dislodged.
    • Points will be awarded for successful back to back performance of 1 and 2 point obstacles only. Points will not be awarded for successful back to back performance of the same 3-4 points obstacle.
    • 1-point obstacles: Hurdles
    • 2-point obstacles: Tunnels, tyre, long jump
    • 3-point obstacles: See-saw, dog walk, A-frame, less than 10 weave poles
    • 4-point obstacles: weave poles(10 or 12)
    • ONLY 1 obstacle of the closing sequence can be attempted when the dog is negotiating the opening sequence.
    • Refusals/Run-outs are not faulted.

Successful Gamble- To achieve a Successful Gamble, the dog is required to successfully execute the prescribed obstacles in the order and within the defined time with NO Course faults and refusals in the closing sequence. The Qualifying Certificate Gamblers Test 1 and 2 is awarded when the dog fulfills the opening sequence minimum points and the Gamble minimum points, within the said time.

Rules for the Closing Sequence (Gamble)- The closing sequence shall be attempted after completing the opening sequence. When the steward whistles at the end of the time for the opening sequence, the Time Keeper shall start his stopwatch, and blow the whistle at the end of the 17secs and 14 secs for the Mini and Maxi dogs respectively. The handler must stay behind a containment line (painted on ground or a line of obstacles). The dog must work at a distance of no less than 2 metres and no more than 5 metres away from the handler. The handler’s arms may extend into the containment line, but not his feet. The obstacles shall be numbered and the dog has to attempt the obstacles in the order numbered. The table is always the last obstacle. The dog only have to get on top of the table to complete the closing sequence.

The ability to earn the bonus Gamble is lost when the following happens-

·        The dog performs 2 or more obstacles of the closing sequence ( in any sequence) when performing the opening sequence

·        The dog displaces a bar of a jump of the closing sequence, while performing the opening sequence.

·        The handler performs the obstacles repeatedly near the closing sequence without accumulating points- considered loitering.

·        Dog makes mistakes and accumulates course faults and refusals in the closing sequence.

·        Dog does not successfully complete the obstacles in the prescribed order within the defined time.

Elimination (no placing) occurs when the following happens-

1.      Dog did not touch the table within the closing time. If a dog fails to successfully complete the obstacles in the closing sequence, it can still get a placing if he continues to run and touch the table within the prescribed time.

2.      Handler runs into the containment area and guides the dog to negotiate the obstacles during the closing sequence.

3.      Dog runs out of the containment area during the closing sequence and even if dog runs back, it will be eliminated.
